ah, the sweet taste of resignation.

My computer's hard drive is fried. Awesome! I have lost most everything since I last backed it up in August (please no lectures, I know, I know). Anyway, am looking to buy a new computer, likely a Mac. Any suggestions, Apple or otherwise?

Since I hadn't heard from you re your computer I thought I'd check in and see if you'd posted on your progress or lack thereof.

First of all, how do you know the HD is "fried?" Who made that diagnosis?

If that's your only problem, buy a new HD, install it and then install the OS using the a friend's copy of XP and use the COA for authentication. You may have to call MS since you're installing a new HD but probably not. You'll be up and running in a jiffy.

If you MUST buy a new computer, and who doesn't want a new computer, I'd go with a PC - to me they are more intuitive and you're used to its peculiarities. Whitney for instance tells me that though she likes the Mac form factor she still prefers working on a PC. In fact she's back to PCs having been given one on her new job.

My advice: get a new hard drive either sent to you, go to newegg.com and order there, or find one locally in Paris (avoid the burbs). While you're at it, buy a external hard drive and back up all your important files from now on using a very useful program (free) called Syncback - google syncback free download (I can't put the HTML address here. This is very easy to set up and will reliably back up your data in seconds.

Good luck.
